| Members invited the community into the station today for our annual Open House. Each year in October in conjunction with the National Fire Protection Association's Fire Prevention Week we open our doors so area residents can get a closer look at what we do and how we do it. Visitors were able to check out our equipment, sit in a fire truck, take a ride on one of our ATVs, grab a snack, and learn about volunteer opportunities that are available. Fire Prevention Week is observed each year in October in commemoration of the October 8, 1871 Great Chicago Fire, which caused devastating damage, killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures. This year's theme is Charge into Fire Safety! Safe Charging is a Superpower - focusing on everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes safe. NFPA recommends: -Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. -Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor. -Unplug your device when it is fully charged. -Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. -Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds. -When on a plane, keep devices where you can see them while charging. Do not charge e-cigarettes or vapes on the plane. Tell a flight attendant if you notice a problem with your device.
Thanks to everyone who came out on this rainy day. Volunteer opportunities remain available, and new members are always welcome. Interested individuals are encouraged to visit the link below for more information. |
